National Health Insurance
All residents staying in Japan for long term (more than 6 months) are required by Japanese law to pay into the National Health Insurance system.
In Naha City, Okinawa, the average monthly insurance bill is around ¥1,300*.

National Pension Insurance
All residents staying in Japan for long term (more than 6 months) are required by Japanese law to pay into the National Pension system.
However, students with an income of less than ¥1,280,000 can be exempt from paying the insurance until graduation.
Other Costs
​Phone bills: ¥2,000 - 4,000 a month
Grocery costs: ¥20,000 a month
Eating out: ¥700 - 1,200 a meal
Transportation: Taxi ¥560 (1.4 km) / Bus ¥240 (In-city) / Monorail ¥230 (3 - 4 stops)
